I was contacted by Countryside Magazine today, they are going to print an article in next months issue that I wrote about Scotch Collies. This may generate a lot of new interest in these dogs, and not a moment too soon, I know of 4 litters upcoming in the next couple of months.

I have checked the bookstore here in Oklahoma and they don't have it yet. Countryside is sending me a free copy so that should be here next week. Can't wait to see how it looks.

Check this article out http://www.thefreelibrary.com/_/print/PrintArticle.aspx?id=19734021
This was printed in Countryside in 1997 and pretty much sums up what I wrote in a more sentimental way.

The countryside is out. I just received mine in the mail today.
Do you have a breed comparision to the modern standard rough collie?
Would like to know, see the differences.Posted 1 year ago # -

We don't have a comparison chart although that is a good idea that we should work on. The following link is to an article that might help you get a better idea about this breed and how it relates to other breeds like the modern Rough Collie.

Then there is our breed standard which might help give you some idea too.

Yep, Countryside is why I am here. I was at a heritage poultry workshop and was given one of the magazines among other farmsteading type magazines. I have zero interest in having a show dog or the new 'production' breeds of poultry.
I grew up on a farm, but left the farm life for over 40 years ago, but never stopped being an old-fashioned country girl. We were organic before the term was coined. I recently bought a small property within a mile of my homeplace and will be raising true heritage poultry and an old Scottish breed of sheep called Soay, and eventually, the old Scottish breed of cattle called Galloway.
That is why I am interested in this old breed of farm dog. We didn't have one (SC) when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, but the next farm over did. I remember what a wonderful dogs they were.
I did notice that the old Scotch Collie had a short snout and a wider face than some of the pictures of puppies and dogs on the websites of the breeders associated with this club. Some of them look like the newer show breeds with the very long, narrow face. How likely am I to be able to acquire a dog that looks like the true Old-Time Scotch Collie? That's the dog I remember from my childhood.

As I mentioned in a recent article (http://www.oldtimefarmshepherd.org/2011/05/13/landrace-vs-purebred-scotch-collies/) the scotch collie has always been a landrace breed having a range of looks. When some people think scotch collie they imagine the wider headed, shorter nosed dog of your childhood while others may think of a dog that looks more like Terhune's Lad and both would be correct.
If you look at our breed registry by clicking the "registry" button above you will see both kinds of dogs and the full range in between the 2 extremes. I personally produced a litter of the type you are looking for last fall and I know of another such litter expected in California very soon.

Thanks, Andy. I checked out the breeder's list and only see one breeder somewhat close to me in West Virginia. I'm thinking it would be quite expensive to get a pup from one coast to the other.

These are just breeders who are currently members of our organization and who are expecting litters this year. All of our breeders are hobby breeders and as such may go quite some time between litters. Maybe next year there may be a litter closer to you.
In my experience it costs around $300 to ship a pup across the country by airplane, so yes, it can be expensive. But being a rare breed means that not everyone will have one close by, I think we have a pretty good distribution across the country though.

I heard from a member of my poultry and garden club that there was a litter born in West Virginia recently, less than two hours from me. I am subscribed to updates, but didn't get the notice of the puppies being born like my friend did. I am looking forward to an announcement soon.

The breeder of these pups has not asked me to announce it, so I have not, there are only 3 pups in the litter so she is probably not worried about placing them all. The pups are probably around 2 weeks old now and the parents are in our breed registry. The breeder's website is at http://heilandthistlefarmcollies.shutterfly.com/ you will find her phone number and email address there.

Thanks. I e-mailed the breeder on the 22nd, but haven't heard back, so with only three, they are probably already spoken for. I really like the looks of Highland Thistle's Diego--my idea of what a farm collie looks like.

I know of a planned litter later this year in New Jersey if that's not too far away for you, it is by a daughter of Diego's.
If you like Diego, there is a litter expected in a couple weeks in Texas by his full brother, Gabby. 4jacres.wordpress.com who incidentally is the dog pictured in the Countryside article.
